Stephen L. Hammerman

STEPHEN L. HAMMERMAN - 1999 Recipient

ASECA is proud to announce that Stephen L. Hammerman has been selected as the seventh recipient of the William O. Douglas Award.

Mr. Hammerman began his distinguished career after completing law school at New York University in 1962. From 1964 to 1968, Mr. Hammerman served as Assistant United States Attorney in the Criminal Division for the Southern District of New York. Mr. Hammerman joined Merrill Lynch & Co., Inc. in 1978, and in 1979 he was appointed as New York Regional Administrator for the Securities and Exchange Commission. After leaving the Commission, he rejoined Merrill Lynch in 1981 as General Counsel and became Vice Chairman of the Board of Merrill Lynch. Mr. Hammerman has contributed to his profession and the securities industry throughout his career. In 1985, President Ronald Reagan appointed him to the Board of Directors of the Securities Investors Protection Corporation for a term expiring in 1987. Mr. Hammerman served as the 1988 Chairman of the Board of Governors of the national Association of securities Dealers. From June 1995 to May 1997, Mr. Hammerman served on the Board of Directors of the New York Stock Exchange. Mr. Hammerman has selflessly given his time to charitable organizations throughout his life. He served on the boards of the Long Island Jewish Medical Center, the National Center for Disability Services, the Nassau County Crimestoppers, the National Organization on Disability, and the Policy Athletic League.
